The 'upcycling', the "eco" and the second hand are increasingly rooted in our day to day. Feeling that in our hands we have something exclusive and with past history makes us empower ourselves. For this reason, and with the aim of reusing, being sustainable and giving waste a second life, a group of women, whose job is to sew the nets of large fishing boats, has begun to develop and create bags with the nets in disuse.

The trade of the net has an indefinite antiquity. They don't even know when it started. As they acknowledge, "the nets have existed since the first fisherman", a job that requires thoroughness, strong hands and a deep love and dedication for the trade. Her grandmothers, mothers and aunts were her true mentors, a trade that has been passed down from generation to generation and has survived to this day, although this work currently has little visibility and recognition. In fact, the latter is not new, since in the past it was not paid work either; women whose husbands, brothers or sons owned a boat, were in charge of sewing the broken nets.

With all this, there is something related to nets, fashion and bags that has made the entire Bidasoa region and part of Gipuzkoa fall in love. These are the original bags created by five nets from the port of Hondarribia under the HonSare brand. Bags with a fabric base and with the outside lined with nets from fishing boats. Thicker, narrower, black or brown nets that shine over colored fabrics that make the final result something new, original and super cool.

The idea of creating bags with nets arose after an exhibition in the port of Donostia, where the trajectory and worth of these women was recognized. At that moment, they decided to get together and launch their own line of bags so that what they do in the ports would have greater visibility.

Designs that make a difference

There are two types of bags in the HonSare firm: the first of them has been categorized as "all-terrain". It can be carried over the shoulder or turned into a backpack, with the strings on the sides. To go for a walk, to shop or to enjoy an afternoon of coffee in which you want to bet on a basic and relaxed look, it is a perfect option. But for lovers of the formal, who opt for the so-called "fashion" touch, we find a smaller model with a hard handle to carry it as a clutch. This would be the second option, as striking as the first, although more sophisticated and not as 'comfy'.

Without a doubt, they are bags that do not go, nor will they go unnoticed. In a 'tote' or hand-held style, they will help to reinforce and give a different and more carefree style to the 'outfit'. In addition, through this capsule collection of the Hondarribia nets, it will help to make society aware of the importance of keeping our seas clean, free of plastic waste.
