The Hermès Kelly bag, the classic that has gone from the most exclusive wardrobes to the influencers

"I have been looking at this beauty all day while working from my bed." With this phrase accompanied by a heart, the influencer Pernille Teisbaek declared love on Instagram for her new bag. An Hermès Kelly that was still resting in her box under the tissue paper. With more than 240 comments, the publication far exceeded the average number of interactions of the Danish woman and, look, it is rare for an object to achieve more engagement than a look. Symbol of elegance and savoir faire, it is obvious that in this case we are not dealing with a bag to use.

Thanks to their recognizable timeless aesthetics and renowned quality, Hermés designs have become something of a collector's item whose value increases over time, justifying your investment. Her handbags have reached exorbitant figures at auctions; like the $125,000 he paid in 2013 in Dallas for a sophisticated Kelly made of crocodile skin. In fact, the French firm has been one of those that has best weathered the pandemic crisis in terms of sales.

THIS IS HOW INFLUENCERS WEAR THE HERMÈS KELLY

Seducing the new generations is one of the great challenges of luxury brands. Although Hermès does not resort to the surprising techniques of Gucci or Balenciaga, immersed in a pioneering digital strategy, it has been able to conquer the queens of Instagram who proudly post their bags with its classics.

Fashion consultant Linda Tol paired her black Hermès Kelly with a sophisticated winter-themed ensemble and basic garments: pleated trousers, a cloth coat and a masculine shirt. The classics are always synonymous with elegance.

One of Erika Boldrin's latest posts also features a Kelly bag. True to his personal style and playing with contrast, the Italian influencer combined it with jogger pants, exposed socks and New Balance sneakers.

For his part, Emili Sinlev has released the mini version of the Kelly (there are eight sizes in total) in orange. Daring, as always, the Danish escapes from the classic looks to coordinate it with a green fur coat and matching cap.

THE STORY OF THE HERMèS KELLY BAG

Like any mythical bag, the Hemès Kelly has a fascinating story behind it. Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas, the son-in-law of Émile Hermès and his successor as director of the firm, its refined aesthetics and practical nature were a real revolution. Far from the decorative function of the bags of the time, it provided ample space capacity and responded to the needs of working and independent women. Back then the impractical clutch was the dominant bag.

His world fame would come thanks to Grace Kelly, the beloved Hollywood actress and future princess of Monaco. In 1956 the photograph of her with said bag hanging under her arm went around the world. Turned into her fetish accessory, she would have one in each color, which led the firm to rename the model Kelly in her honor.

All the celebrities wanted to have a Kelly in their possession. Catherine Deneuve herself confesses to having given it to herself with her first good salary. It has also been worn by Audrey Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich.

The impeccable workmanship contributes to creating the charm of it. Handcrafted by the best craftsmen using traditional techniques, 20 hours of work are invested in each model just to sew and assemble the pieces, 36 in total. Its trapezoidal shape, the trimmed flap and the two triangular bellows make up its recognizable aesthetic, fully current no matter how many years go by.
