El Carrizos: Thief, sir, not a thief!

In the criminal history of Mexico there are all kinds of murderers and thugs, from the most grotesque that cause repulsion such as César Librado Legorreta, "El Coqueto", Goyo Cárdenas, José Luis Calva Zepeda, "El Caníbal de la Guerrero", to the most strangers like “El Mataindigentes” or Juana Barraza, “La Mataviejitas”; others go little less than unnoticed, but there are undoubtedly some with very particular features that live in the collective memory and even, for some particular reason, become endearing.

This time I will tell you about Efraín Alcaraz Montes de Oca, who, by name, does not tell us anything, but yes, his criminal nickname of "El Carrizos" and his long criminal history, where his robberies at the residence of President Luis Echeverría himself stand out. Álvarez and that of the pentapichichi, Hugo Sánchez.

Secret Files

Tlatlaya case: They were gunned down at close range inside a warehouse

Efraín Alcaraz Montes de Oca, alias “El Carrizos”, was born into a very poor family. During his childhood he was hungry, he never had a birthday cake, much less a gift or a toy brought by the Three Wise Men, and we didn't even speak of affection. At a very young age, he realized that life was very unequal for some like him, who practically learned to survive on the street.

The poverty in which he grew up led him to steal from a very young age. His first steps in the underworld were taken by snatching bags from ladies and stealing bicycles in his neighborhood. His slim build helped him run and scurry to safety. Hence his family nicknamed him "El Carrizos". In his adolescence he became friends with Rafael Infante "El Cuatro Vientos", or also known as "El Dedos de Seda", a professional grope who dedicated himself in the 40s and 50s to lowering wallets in Los Angeles, California, Chicago and New York; It is said that he attended the games of the baseball World Series to fleece the most exclusive clientele. This subject taught him the "trade" of pickpocketing and Efraín attended the massive shows at the Arena Coliseo, the Blanquita Theater, the Mexico Bullring, circus performances, where he obtained good loot. Years later he met "El Conejo", a criminal who taught him how to "throw goals"; that is, to sell and pawn copper pieces as if they were gold in the rough neighborhood of Tepito.

El Carrizos: ¡Ladrón, señor, no ratero!

But Efraín was a very clever boy, he involved with words and his hands developed a lot of dexterity, this, plus his excessive ambition, demanded more adventurous challenges and it was then, when he remembered the words of his grandfather, who one day told him: " son, if you don't compose yourself anymore, if you're not the best, at least, don't be one of the crowd ".

Like a call of fate, in the 1960s, to the rhythm of swing "El Carrizos" he met "El Elotes" at a kermesse in the Polvorín, on 25th Street, in Colonia Prohogar. A guy who dedicated himself to "zorrear" (assaulting houses-room), who taught him to open plates, locks, safes and deactivate alarms. This thief became famous for stealing the pistols used by the target shooting competitors at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. A regular criminal who caused a sensation every time he was arrested with large loot and presented at police stations. Until the dagger of another thug nicknamed "El Chato", cut his life.

But "El Carrizos" learned all his tricks and skills well and began his career as a "fox", he swore to be a professional and not disappoint his grandfather.
