Patricia Peiteado has two stores on Rúa das Ameas de Pilgrim Bag, where she sells bags designed and made with her own hands. She says that the first ones she made she gave to her friends "so they could test them" and this year she plans to launch a "more exclusive" version in leather, as well as card holders as a complementary product and within the same range. The nets are filled with the local design of the Pilgrim Bag, created and handcrafted by Patricia Peiteado, compared to a very similar model from the Italian luxury house

A little less than three years ago, she opened her doors in the Praza de Abastos, a small stall with handmade bags in Santiago by a local designer, Patricia Peiteado. The reception of her Pilgrim Bags, inspired by the sacks or bundles of pilgrims, "was brutal", she recalls, both by tourists and Compostela. What she never imagined is that one day they would have an almost twin brother, of great resemblance, and less coming from a luxury firm like Dolce & Gabbana.

She says that her surprise for her was capital when a friend who was shopping sent her a photo of the candy bag launched by D & G: «It is almost the same as the first models I made, with the cord finished off with a knot. I thought about it a lot and spent a few nights without sleeping because I didn't want to finish off the rope that serves as a closure like that. She ended up fraying and it seemed to me that she was left unfinished. I tried liquid silicone and other inventions. It took me three weeks to find a solution that I liked, a bespoke metal lug for the cord.” And that is the main difference between the Italian house's discord bag and the Pilgrim Bag, which can be customized in four sizes and a wide color palette (you can even add a custom laser engraving).

Patricia published a photo of the two models together on social networks, almost as an anecdote, and was again amazed to see how they turned to her. «Some encouraged me to report, but nothing was further from my idea. If the creative Dolce & Gabbana were inspired by Galician designs, such as those of Sargadelos or those of Pilgrim Bag, it is a pride, "says Patricia, who acknowledges with satisfaction that she came out ahead in the comparison. The vast majority opted for her creation, for the value of local and artisan clothing (ecofriendly and made by herself, with the help of Dolo, her right hand in this business adventure), and for the defense of small businesses in her eternal fight against the Goliath of the big brands. "What a horrible copy", "plagiarizing the smallest", "you have nothing to envy D&G" or "I do not change my two Pilgrims for any D&G", were some of the reactions received.

«The truth is that I still haven't been to see the Dolce & Gabbana in person. I would like to touch the fabric and see how much it costs, out of curiosity», commented the designer born in A Estrada and living in the Galician capital for years. Coincidences of life, Pilgrim Bag also has its own perfume, "because she really liked the way our bags smelled," says this entrepreneur full of new ideas with which to continue growing. Among them is the launch of a limited edition of card holders and a new version of her bags in high-end leather with inside pockets. «The Pilgrim Bags were designed for everyday use and have a light and very durable fabric. The leather ones are heavier, aimed at a public that asks for a plus of exclusivity, and although they cost more, they also have a different quality, ”says Patricia.

She explains that during the past year her sales fell due to the pandemic and the restrictions imposed. However, she moved her house during the confinement and was able to attend to different requests that came to her from various corners of Spain. Patricia does not forget how she sent the bags delivered in the quarantine by the elevator so that an MRW employee would pick them up downstairs and start the distribution that kept her active. They were commissions from clients who knew her work and were looking, for example, for an exclusive and personalized gift for Mother's Day or to surprise a loved one who they couldn't hug on a special occasion.

Among the different formats it offers, the one with the greatest output is the medium-sized and more rounded one, says the designer: “It is the original model, inspired by the bundles of pilgrims. There is also a large one in which everything fits, another something smaller and longer, and the XS ». The star colour? "It goes by seasons," answers Patricia. This year, for example, she wears orange or electric blue a lot, two shades of fashion this summer that were hardly in demand last year. The basics, such as navy blue in winter, or cream when the good weather arrives, are still a safe bet. And, to give it a fun touch, you can also choose the color of the laces and bet on original color contrasts, or include some extra such as metal straps.
