They go against the grain: luxury tourism is growing in Asia. What are the most sought-after tourist destinations in Asia?

The Asian region has grown in recent years and is increasingly becoming a luxury destination due to its infrastructure, hotel investment and the supply of crystal clear water with white sand.

In Southeast Asia, a series of luxury hotels opened this year that have not yet been released due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has slowed tourism worldwide. Asia is leading hotel development in recent times, a trend that continued during the covid-19 outbreak.

The French group AccorHotels is one of those that decided to invest in said continent: this year it opened 76 hotels in Asia and has 32 more scheduled to open before the end of 2020. That is equivalent to almost 17,000 new rooms, which is approximately 35% less than Accor's pre-Covid targets.

“The US and European markets are more mature than the Asian hotel markets. In addition, some Asian countries were able to control Covid better than other parts of the world, with China, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea leading the way," said Gaynor Reid, vice president of the French company.

On the other hand, he explained that other reasons to invest in China, which is that there is a lot of domestic tourism: “Before Covid, around 80% of hotel reservations in Asia came from the same continent, of which more than half were Chinese tourists, who will continue to be the engine of tourism growth in Asia".

A room for two people at AccorHotels in central China with parking, a restaurant, a bar, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a swimming pool and a gym has a value of 330 dollars for 8 nights, while in Bangkok, Thailand, it reaches 362 dollars. Both without taxes.

The Maldives Islands are one of the most luxurious destinations in Southeast Asia, mainly Bora Bora with its luxurious hotels on the sea. Male, Lhaviyani, Rangali Island and Kihavah Huravalhi are some of the cities where the popular wooden and thatched roof huts are found, in which each room has its exit to the ocean.

Many celebrities like the singers Celine Dion and Axl Rose take refuge on the small island of Kurendhoo, in Lhaviyani. There are spa resorts there, small villas with butlers for each room, an international gastronomic offer. This place is sustainable since it was built with biodegradable materials of natural origin, trying, in turn, to merge with the environment.
