The jewelry is set on the mount

In addition, the pieces are accompanied by a card containing verses by Antonio Noriega Valera, which refer to the toxo flower. In this way it manages to be more linked to culture, "we give away the card with the orders, to somehow relate them even more to Galician culture" explains the craftsman, along with the fact that it is an action that he considers he should do as a way of thanking and to expand his work: «It is a beautiful act. It is giving something that recreates the land, that provides aesthetic value and that shows the cultural contribution of our ancestors.

Herba de namorar: a magical Galicia

Namoradeira CollectionPaz Navas

Another of its key collections is that of Namoradeira, dedicated to the herba de namorar, a characteristic plant of San Andrés de Teixido and some areas of the Costa da Morte, always close to the sea: «It is a lesser-known flower, but that people have a lot of love and appreciation for him, he also has an identification with the culture».

In this collection, by having Toxo's collected experience, he also wanted to find a literary background for it. Some phrases of a Galician author that made reference to the plant: "I had a hunch that I could find some literary or poetic reference to the herb of namorar in popular literature as it is so deeply rooted in Galician culture." Thus, he found a reference in the poetry of Álvaro Cunqueiro, specifically in his book Cantiga nova que se chama Riveira published in 1933, where he collected the medieval songs and rewritten them in a more modern way.

The third of his collections, which also revolves around floral themes, is Máis bela. However, this is no longer a real and existing flower, but rather it is the flower of the Paz Navas brand, that is, of its own creation. In addition, it is very abstract, which is why it has different pieces of a multitude of colors, shapes and designs.

Work with great care to create pieces with their own identity

Paz Navas makes her pieces on a resin base, paints them artistically using very fine brushes, adds several layers of special varnishes and then, finally, adds silver. Which means that each piece is unique because it is individually hand-painted and, explains Marcos, that is something appreciated by most customers.

He indicates that the process of creation requires a process of simplification. "When you face the design of a plant as complex as a toxo or a herb of namorar on a surface of a few centimeters, it requires a process of simplification of the shape and colors", furthermore, he adds: "It is a process which also requires time, now, once you have it, you can only improve and polish it».

In general, each year they launch new models or collections, as it is what the market and customers ask for, both in stores and those who visit craft fairs. He explains that when people visit one of these brands or these workshops they always expect the best from them and that many times the best are new pieces, apart from the fact that the public of craftsmanship is usually very loyal. However, in recent months, with the issue of the pandemic, activity in the workshops has been frozen with respect to the usual work rhythms and it has not been possible to experience much in the market: "I have a collection at the gates of going out and hopefully in a few months it can come to light.

Arousing the curiosity of outsiders and not so outsiders

The Galician designer says that people from outside Galicia who do not know the brand are first interested in its aesthetics since they do not know the existence of the flower, "now our job when it comes to selling it is to present what it means, what that represent the flowers that they are seeing, it is work that we have”, he emphasizes. He explains that he is interesting because they see him very integrated into our culture and that these are always things that are valued. So they come with great interest, added to the plus that at fairs they are always in front of the person who sells them and that is an enriching advantage because they can explain to them what they sell and that is highly valued by the person who buys. . Being with the authors is not the same as being with a person who does not know the creation procedure. Therefore, people are attracted to it and see it with great interest.

Regarding the Galician public, he points out that they usually identify with what they have in a deeper way because a person from outside can see it because it is beautiful, but someone from here has another experience of seeing those plants: «Or it has stung a toxo, they have called it toxo…, let's say that there is more complicity. For example, around toxo they have come to teach me from tattoos to several different proposals that use it as a symbol».
