Sales during the weekend related to "Black Friday" and the Christmas season could close above those registered for the same date last year.

This was announced by Iván Báez, president of the Puerto Rico's DetMany of federal aids related to pandemic.

"The balance was quite positive. In general terms, if we compare with last year that several events were generated during the Christmas season, more or less had a similar or slightly better behavior, ”said Báez when talking with Noticel.

“We still have to see today's numbers (yesterday, Sunday) and next week that enters the Christmas bonus of public employees as additional barometers to measure consumers' behavior, but I understand that we will be slightly above.I have no figures, but we must be ‘single-digit’ ’above,” he added.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Walmart Public Affairs also said that many private companies grant the Christmas Bonus early, which could be reflected in sales next week.

"That injection barometer to the economy of about $ 70 million, we must see how it behaves, but so far, the behavior has been favorable," he said.

Báez said there were no unfortunate setbacks or incident.

“I think this logistics was a success, to make several events throughout the season. That is good from the point of view of the consumer, prevents agglomerations for the issue of COVID-19 and gives people's better purchase experience. At the end of the day, I think that is what it is about, that going to buy your Christmas gift does not become a nightmare, ”he said.

He said that, both in 2020 and 2021, sales were good, in part, due to the large number of federal funds that entered the island related to the pandemic and that by 2022 there should be a readjustment that reflects less sales.

"These two years have to look at them well objectively. They were years of artificial injections of federal funds to the economy. That will not come back.Next year I think we will return to sales of prepazed levels, ”he said.

"For next year, what come are construction projects that are most aimed at infrastructure," he said.

On the other hand, Báez says it is aware that online purchases arrived to stay and the pandemic precipitated it, while stressing that merchants must adapt to that need of the consumer, to move to new alternatives such as online or order stores andcollected, among others.

However, contrary to many consumers in the United States and other countries in the world, he understands that Puerto Rican still likes to buy physically

“In Puerto Rico, national sport continues to go to stores.People love to leave and it is a special socialization, ”he said.
