Auction of Marie Antoinette jewelry for more than 8 million dollars

A pair of diamond bracelets that belonged to Marie Antoinette, the famous wife of French King Louis XVI who met her end on the guillotine during the French Revolution, sold for €7.46 million on Tuesday. Swiss francs (8.34 million US dollars).

The opulent bracelets, among the French royal's jewelery still for public sale, were one of the highlights at a Christie's auction in Geneva.

They feature 112 diamonds, each weighing 97 grams (3.4 ounces), and include silver and gold.

The pair sold for well over the asking price, which was between 2 and 4 million Swiss francs. The final price included taxes and commissions.

The buyer did not identify himself.

After Marie Antoinette's death in the French Revolution in 1793, the bangles, commissioned some 17 years earlier, passed into the hands of her daughter Marie-Theresa and remained in the royal line for more than 200 years, according to Christie's.
