Decree does allow regularization of brands such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Volkswagen

By Pavel Juarez |

The "crooked" vehicle regularization decree does not exclude units with brands such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Volkswagen.

“Everything has to do with the serial number: if it starts with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, those numbers tell us that they were built in Mexico, the United States or Canada and it is possible to import them. If we are talking about other numbers outside of those or letters, they no longer enter: for example, the J indicates that it is a Japanese vehicle or the W that was assembled in Europe, ”clarified Grupo Palco, a company specialized in foreign trade.

“In fact, there is Toyota and Volkswagen. Many of the Volkswagens are assembled in Mexico and start with serial number 5," said the consulted specialist.

The decree is not exclusive in relation to foreign brands, but to the country of assembly that does not belong to the T-MEC.

In other words, even if it is a brand designed in Europe or Asia, but assembled in the American continent, it falls within the legal requirements for regularization.

Decreto sí permite regularización de marcas como Honda, Toyota, Hyundai y Volkswagen

In addition, we can find vehicles assembled in Mexico with brands such as: Hyundai, Nissan, Audi, Honda or Mazda.

These trademarks are eligible for regularization; except for BMW, which does not assemble vehicles here, or the Mexican luxury vehicle, Mastretta.

All American brands are added, as long as they comply with the model year allowed by the federal authority.

"As long as they are not recent models and fall within the requirement of the decree in which vehicles from 2014 and below enter," he pointed out.

Corroborates information on leading brands of customs agents

The information was corroborated by the leader of the Local Association of Customs Agents, Nora Yu Hernández.

«Which vehicles can: those that originate in Mexico, the United States or Canada, which start with a number from one to five. For example, there is a Nissan that is made or assembled in Mexico and yes it can. What begins with a letter cannot be », she clarified.

In order to know if the vehicle is eligible for importation, the serial number must begin with any digit from one to five.

Article 2 of the decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday says:

«Used vehicles whose Vehicle Identification Number corresponds to the vehicle's manufacturing or assembly in Mexico, the United States of America or Canada and are classified in the tariff fractions indicated in the following paragraph, which as of October 19, 2021 were in the territory of the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Durango, Michoacán de Ocampo, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas and do not have the document that proves their legal stay in the country, to effects of their regularization in national territory, they may be definitively imported without requiring a certificate of origin, prior permission from the Ministry of Economy, or registration in the Register of Importers.
