Hotel Sands Suites Resort & Spa obtains Green Globe certification

Green Globe has awarded Sands Suites Resort & Spa, a hotel with magnificent views of Tamarin Bay and Le Morne Mountain, tucked away in the most serene and sheltered spot on the warm west coast of Mauritius, its inaugural certification.

Our social responsibility constitutes an integral part of our growth strategy”, said Guillaume Brillatz, general manager of the resort.

Major sustainability initiatives already in place on the property aim to minimize impacts to the landfill with a specific focus on the 5 R's (dispose, reduce, reuse, reuse, and recycle). The resort makes optimal use of retired bed linen and towels and has initiated social programs in support of local communities.

Sands Suites Resort & Spa does not compromise on sustainability while providing the high-quality services of a luxury property. Guests receive 100% fresh clean bedding during their stay. An in-house tailor transforms lightly stained bedding into single-use laundry bags. Before implementing this initiative, replacement costs were high as laundry bags were imported and guests also took laundry bags home on departure.

Also, good quality 100% cotton bath towels with any noticeable stains are cut and re-sewn into hand and face towels. Any towel beyond reuse is shredded and reused as mopping material. The resort found that recycling old sheets and towels has led to significant savings in laundry and transportation costs. Retired bedding in good condition is also distributed to resort staff members who wish to participate in recycling initiatives.

Upon arrival at the Sand Suites Resort & Spa guests will be presented with exclusive complimentary beach bags. Each handmade bag created from local unbleached (raw) linen promotes the local island experience and the resort's talented tailors. Substantial savings have been made in the manufacturing, packaging and transportation costs of the beach bags.

Likewise, in accordance with its Corporate Social Responsibility policy, the complex works together with Caritas Mauricio.

Caritas shares the mission of the Catholic Church to help the poor and promote charity and justice throughout the world. Aiming to provide a ray of hope to those less fortunate, Sands Suites donates retired sheets, pillows, blankets and uniforms to Caritas Ile Maurice, which distributes items to those most in need in nearby communities.
