The European Union authorizes wines without alcohol

The new Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, published on December 6, 2021, is characterized by its openness to innovation.

One of the novelties for the wine sector consists of the officialization of dealcoholization and partial dealcoholization of wine. In defining this new regulatory framework, the EU has relied on the work of the OIV, mainly in resolutions OIV-ECO 523-2016, OIV-ECO 433-2012 and OIV-ECO 432-2012.

From now on, the name of the product category (mandatory indication) can be completed with the terms "dealcoholized" or "partially dealcoholized" for the following products: "wine", "sparkling wine" and "aerated sparkling wine". Total dealcoholization is limited to products without geographical indication or appellation of origin. Partial dealcoholization is authorized for all wines, sparkling wines and sparkling wines.

La Unión Europea autoriza los vinos sin alcohol

The alcohol content limit between "dealcoholized" and "partially dealcoholized" is the one established by the OIV in 2012: 0.5%.

Following the recommendations of the OIV (OIV-OENO 394A-2012), the permitted dealcoholisation operations in order to reduce part or almost all of the ethanol content in these products are partial vacuum evaporation and/or membrane techniques and /or distillation.

The wine sector is committed to innovation and is sensitive to the evolution of consumer concerns, respecting the integrity and traditions of the product.

The OIV Member States are currently working on guidelines defining the specific oenological practices that would apply to these new products.
