The secret of the crown of Charles of England that has been revealed 50 years later

This Monday, Queen Elizabeth II gathered members of her family at Buckingham Palace to commemorate Charles of England's 50th birthday as Prince of Wales. It was in 1969 when the monarch placed her son in Caernarfon Castle a gold crown that, in recent days, has been the center of attention after David Mason, the man who made it, has revealed the amazing secret it hides.

As he has confessed, the future heir to the British throne was declared Prince of Wales with a crown whose orb is a gold-plated ping pong ball. A fact that Charles of England himself was unaware of at that time and that, as the goldsmith himself admits, may still be unknown today.

This 74-year-old retired chemical research manager has revealed to the Daily Mail not only this secret but also the arduous elaboration of this crown, designed by the famous goldsmith Louis Osman, which some called the "impostor crown".

It was in March 1969 that David Mason, then 28 years old, received a call from Osman at his office at Elgelhard Industries in Cinderfold, who revealed to the young goldsmith that he had been appointed to design the crown for the investiture of the Prince of Wales. Queen Elizabeth II's son wanted an oval design that would fit a "modern young man" and show off his haircut and ears.

The official jeweler of the British crown submitted a proposal but it was rejected by the Labor government at the time for being too luxurious. By then, there were only four months left for the investiture and the designer hoped that it could be done with a revolutionary process that could replicate even the smallest detail of the wooden base created in the first phase. Also, much less gold was used than normal.

However, the first version, which was perfect at first, disintegrated in his hands when he was hit with a seal. Almost without time, they had to make a second version in which to perfect the orb, which Osman had demanded to be completely spherical. "I pondered how on earth to make this 3D electroformed object, since no one had done it before. With only a few days left and watching a game of ping pong, I went over to the TV and saw the solution. The process worked, but since there was no way of sacra the ball we had to leave it inside", he confessed.
