Why the most expensive perfume in the world costs $50,000 USD

The most expensive perfume -sold- in the world cost a million dollars. Absurd, yes, but we understand that it was not just a glass bottle with liquid flavoring. On that occasion Donna Karan teamed up with jewelry designer Martin Katz to design not only the most expensive perfume of all time, but the most elaborate perfume bottle as well. The bottle contained 2,909 gemstones including 183 yellow sapphires, 2,700 white diamonds, a 7.18-carat oval cabochon sapphire from Sri Lanka, 15 pink diamonds from Australia, 4 rose-cut diamonds, a 1.6-carat Paraiba turquoise tourmaline Brazil, a 3.07-carat oval-cut ruby, a 4.03-carat rose-cut pear-cut diamond and a 2.43-carat canary yellow diamond. The stones were laid by hand for 1,500 hours, outlining the New York City skyline.

And although the occasion in which a perfume of these characteristics goes on sale is rare, as you might imagine, the market for extra-luxury perfumes is one that is rarely talked about, but much is paid for. Massively well-known luxury brands like Chanel and Tom Ford have their cards set there in the form of bottles that hover around $3,800 for Chanel's Gardenia Les Exclusifs and $860 for Ford's Fucking Fabulous. .

But this category in the world of fragrances really belongs to niche perfumes. Brands that the average Sephora shopper probably won't recognize. This is the case of Krigler, the perfumery house founded in 1904 in Germany, which has already gone through five generations making ultra-luxury perfumes and candles, and which can now design your own fragrance, in nine months of work, interviews, family regressions and olfactory tests, for $50,000 USD.

Por qué el perfume más caro del mundo cuesta .000 USD

In an interview that the journalist Molly Young did with Ben Krigler for Allure in 2017, the heir to the perfume empire explained to him, in a duplex suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where these types of meetings are held, that making a perfume at the measure goes beyond deciphering personal tastes or how we want to present ourselves to the world, "When you create a personalized perfume, you become a perfumer," explained Krigler, as he guided her through the process of making her own personalized perfume, with questions such as "What was your favorite cake as a child?" and "What's your favorite season?"

Years later, in a fanzine titled “The things they fancied”, Young reveals more curious questions that Krigler asked him on that occasion: “Do you like basil? Do you like oceanic atmospheres? What do you eat for breakfast? Do you like to drive? What materials do you like to touch, cotton, velvet, silk, wool? Do you have brothers? They are married?" The interview continues with questions that have little to do with Young's olfactory preferences, suggesting that the nine-month process of making a custom perfume may feel more like a lengthy therapeutic treatment than the creation of a fragrance that will eventually end in an empty jar.

After several hours of interviewing, Krigler explains that he will send the recording of the conversation to his team based in France for analysis. A month later they would meet again to smell some pure ingredients such as rose water, black tea, jasmine. The customer would tell you what he likes and what he doesn't. A month later the house sends the first formulas. If you are paying $50,000 for the perfume, it is almost your duty not to settle for these first tests, and thus begins the coming and going of smells, feedback and the graduation of an indecisive amateur into a master perfumer.
