6 brands that prove that nursing clothes can be (very) pretty

A quick Google search for 'nursing clothes' gives us a good snapshot of the sector. With the exception of a few proposals, designs designed for breastfeeding tend to sacrifice design in favor of practicality. But a new batch of banners arrive ready to show that aesthetics and functionality are not at odds. We collect the best options to dress with style at this stage:

1. Madrid

This little show that manufactures its clothes in New York opts for dresses, tops or jumpsuits that combine easy access to the chest –some even have a built-in bra– with an appetizing pattern. The images of the campaign are the best example of his philosophy: do not give up the delicate, the modern and the feminine at this stage. Ashley Melone and Danielle Walish, the two friends behind the brand – and who gave birth five weeks apart – say they didn't have much trouble finding nice clothes during pregnancy but things got complicated during the pregnancy phase. lactation. Relatives and acquaintances proved them right: breastfeeding or expressing breast milk at work is an impossible mission if you wear clothes that are not prepared for this task. One of her friends opted to put up a screen in her office for some privacy. Another, an actress, had to completely remove her dress in the middle of an event in order to remove the milk. The specific options they found were limited to cotton t-shirts and little else. This is how they detected a niche: garments were needed that, without losing sight of trends and the fashion factor, would allow breastfeeding at any time and place.

No sooner said than done. Madri, her firm, has just presented its first collection: a line of special summer garments made in New York from Japanese cotton and seersucker, two fibers that respect the skin of mother and baby. The idea – and above all its execution – has already caught the attention of the American edition of Vogue. Their prices range from 80 euros to 300 euros and, although at the moment they do not have international shipments as such, they allow you to request them via email. The designers celebrate the fact that American culture is "beginning to accept as normal" breastfeeding in public and want to help women who decide to breastfeed by offering them comfortable but beautiful clothes.

2. Mamalicious

«We dress women who are going to be mothers and also new mothers. For any occasion and always in style », they say on their website. This firm, which belongs to the Bestseller group (the same one behind Vero Moda or Jack & Jones), has one of the best offers on the net to wear during this stage. Its 'nursing' line includes dresses, tops, postpartum pants, lingerie, a line of basics that are sold two by two and even a section of designs with a Nordic spirit (the banner is Swedish). The best of their proposal are probably the dresses with options for both day-to-day and special occasions for about 40-50 euros. They ship to Spain and neither 'boring' nor unsightly are adjectives that go with it.

3.Oysho

The Spanish brand sells under the umbrella of its 'maternity' line lingerie designed to breastfeed without complications. Bras with removable cups, wide nightgowns with adjustable straps, robes and even high-waisted panties make up an affordable proposal made of organic cotton and high-quality modal fabrics; the most suitable both at this stage and during pregnancy (the firm also has a collection of maternity lingerie). White, gray or pale pink are the protagonists of the collection that, although it defends basic cuts and finishes, maintains the design and femininity by adding lace and small decorative details.

4. Asses

The British portal has a good selection of nursing clothes, both its own and those of other firms it sells. One of Asos' strengths is that they design clothes with all types of women in mind: 'curvy', 'petite' and, of course, also for pregnant women. Their selection includes basic underwear or t-shirts but also a wide repertoire of dresses with a wrap neckline (some even perfect for attending an event or dressing as a guest), two-piece sets and blouses with on-trend details such as flared sleeves or ruffles. Its prices, following in the footsteps of those of its entire offer, are very competitive: none of the designs in the section exceeds 60 euros.

5. Mit Mat Mama

The Spanish Mit Mat Mama renews the genre every week and has ten physical stores spread between Barcelona and Madrid, in addition to the online one. Her true strength is in maternity clothes, but she has recently launched a line of dresses and t-shirts specifically for breastfeeding. It is true that 'basic' is the best word to define their proposals –in solid colors and fabrics such as viscose or cotton–, but their patterns have a contemporary touch. It is a 'women for women' company with more than 30 years of history and a clear philosophy: local production, sustainability and comfortable and beautiful clothing for all stages of pregnancy.

6. Reformation

The American firm revolutionized the network by placing the model Abby Brothers breastfeeding her baby in one of her campaigns. The brand, which does not have a specific line for parenting, claimed its dresses as suitable for breastfeeding thanks to their generous necklines. Seeing a mother breastfeed dressed in one of her appetizing and sensual maxi dresses earned them the applause of the network. "Brilliant! One of the most difficult things is finding shirts and dresses that allow easy access to feed our little ones. I love the dress. Bravo!”, wrote the followers of the brand on social networks. Who knows if after launching clothes for plus sizes or wedding dresses they will be encouraged with maternity ones. Meanwhile there is no doubt that Reformation's wide necklines and patterns are also suitable for breastfeeding.
