Bonvivant with the writer Jorge Carrión, whiskey in a black bottle and seven-star beer

This week we have the luxury of having the writer Jorge Carrión as a guest at Bonvivant.

He publishes regularly in various media, including the opinion section in Spanish of The New York Times and La Vanguardia. He is the author of the novels 'The dead', 'The tourists' and 'The deceased'; and several non-fiction books, including 'Australia. A trip', 'Teleshakespeare', 'Bookstores', 'Barcelona. Book of passages', 'Against Amazon' and 'Lo viral'. With Sagar he has published two comic books: 'Barcelona. Scrap metal tramps' and 'Gothic'; and with Javier Olivares, 'Shakespeare & Cervantes' and 'Warburg & Beach'. He is the author and narrator of the 'Solaris Sound Essays' podcast scripts. It has been translated into fifteen languages.

As you can see, he is someone so interesting that we had no choice but to "force" him to go through our podcast.

But let's go with the usual recommendations of our bonvivant friends.

Juan O'reig offers us a very popular seasonal product in some regions of Spain and, however, little known and recognized in others. It is a dish of succulent “Caracoles” made by the mother of the Michelin star, Ivan Chirón. We assure you that the dish lives up to the fame of her son's restaurant. Juan takes the opportunity to take us on a tour of the places where snails are best prepared. He closes his speech by recommending the song 'I Woke up Today' by the group Port O Brien.

Carlos Carballo brings us a very special whiskey: Black Bottle, a Scotch blended relaunched on the market in 2013, with spicy, fruity and smoky notes characteristic of Islay. To return to the roots of this blend of whiskeys from 1879, the black bottle, which gives the whiskey its name, has been brought back, and the strong influence of Islay has been reduced by more fruity and elegant notes.

On the other hand, Carlos introduces us to the Chopper Monster store. Located in the heart of Madrid's Malasaña neighborhood, on Corredera Alta de San Pablo 21, you will find everything that we Bovivants like: 'clothes', 'records', 'books', 'decoration', 'accessories', ' fanzines', 'collectibles', 'art'….and of course a lot, a lot, rock 'n' roll, a lot of garage and a lot of punk. Everything brought from places as exotic as the United States, Great Britain, Mexico, Germany or the Far East, but also from places as close as Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Asturias, Ponferrada, Benidorm or Valencia. Chopper Monster also has its own brand of clothing made here, with: t-shirts, shirts, baby clothes, beautiful dresses.

Antonio Hedilla recommends the “Siete Estrellas” beer, a collaborative beer made by some of the Madrid craft breweries in order to give it away to the bars and customers who supported them during confinement.

Antonio Gramsci's Anthology is his literary proposal. A gripping book from the first political theorist to care about popular culture. He closes his section with the song 'Ciutat Podrida' by Barcelona's La Banda Trapera del Rio, leading representatives of punk in their city.

The conversation continues with Jorge Carrión talking about his facet as a comics writer. Together with the cartoonist Sagar he has published two works: 'Barcelona, Los Vagabundos de la Chatarra' and 'Warburg & Beach'. We also discussed with him another interesting book about his experience in Australia: 'Australia. A Journey' and the importance of the podcast format. Jorge scripts one of the most successful on the Podium Podcast platform: 'Solaris', a “sound essay” about different current affairs with guests who converse with an algorithm with artificial intelligence.
