Nicola Glass and the challenge of continuing the legacy of Kate Spade
The lights come on and New York's fashion elite applauds the spectacle. Backstage, sitting on a pink velvet sofa, dressed in stunning greenish high-waisted trousers and a silky greenish blouse, the elegant blonde-haired, blue-eyed Northern Irishwoman is taking it all in stride. Glass is warm, friendly, and excited to share her vision for a brand "that should always put a smile on your face."
"I envisioned walking into an incredibly glamorous woman's wardrobe, filled with a rich and eclectic mix of prints and silhouettes, and thought about how you could take these elements and make them your own," Ella Glass explains of the collection. "I was imagining women looking for clothes that are very feminine and energetic, but effortless."
Color was perhaps the most characteristic hallmark of Kate Spade's creations, a factor that Glass has maintained in her work as creative director. "It's very important because it's one of the things that Kate Spade was best known for," she explains, adding a few details about her new reinterpretation: "The colors intensify from rich tones like leafy green, cherry wood and brown, to very vibrant hues like pink pansies and peppermint birch."

Prints have been another way of reviewing the designer's heritage. Specifically, the animal prints. "We play with prints on different types of fabrics, like you'll see on silks and soft wool coats. There's a lot of snake print and cheetah print. I like this idea to offer an element of surprise and transport the customer back along a journey. From afar, some of these prints look animal-like, but when you see them up close, they're actually flowers!"
